The Science Behind SBO Mindsets

Ever heard of Carol Dweck? We thought you might have. She’s the Yale PHD-Wielding, Stanford-Teaching, world-renowned psychologist known for her work on psychological mindsets. Dweck’s concept is centered on two mindsets—the Fixed Mindset and the Growth Mindset.

The Fixed Mindset

  • Avoids challenges
  • Gives up easily
  • Doesn’t value effort
  • Ignores feedback

The Growth Mindset

  • Embraces challenges
  • Perseveres
  • Believes more effort equals better results
  • Learns from feedback

So, what the heck do these mindsets have to do with Small Business Owners (SBOs)? Well, as it turns out, quite a bit. We took Dweck’s research and applied it to our work with SBOs, and as it turns out, SBOs tend to fall into one mindset or the other, and we’ve dubbed them the Artisan (fixed) and the Crusader (growth).  Still want more info on the mindsets?
